As the tech industry continues to evolve, so too do the career paths of its workforce. Our recent Tech Talent Confidence Index, in collaboration with Populix, uncovers a growing restlessness among tech professionals in Indonesia, many of whom are rethinking their place in the industry.

A Workforce in Transition
According to our findings, a large number of respondents are actively considering career shifts, whether that means moving to a different field, changing industry sectors, or altering employment types altogether.

Here’s what the data reveals:

  • 23% are searching for roles in a completely different field.
  • 22% have been offered a position in the same company, but in a different field.
  • 21% have been offered a position at a different level within the same company.
  • 19% are looking to move to a different industry altogether.
  • 17% are considering contract or freelance employment.

These numbers underscore a critical shift in employee mindset. Professionals are not just seeking promotions—they’re reevaluating their entire career trajectory, influenced by evolving job market dynamics, personal priorities, and economic uncertainty.

Why This Matters for Employers
For companies in the tech space, this should be a wake-up call. The traditional approach to employee retention (salary bumps and occasional perks) is no longer sufficient.

To hold onto top talent, organizations must:

  • Offer clear internal mobility and development opportunities.
  • Create more flexible work environments that accommodate changing lifestyle preferences.
  • Listen to employee feedback and act on career growth aspirations.
  • Support professional upskilling to allow internal shifts rather than external exits.

Failing to do so could result in a talent drain that impacts not only productivity but also long-term innovation and competitiveness.

In today’s climate, companies must remain vigilant. Talent retention requires more than just competitive pay; it calls for strategic planning, career development pathways, and a strong company culture. Those who invest in their people today will be better positioned to navigate tomorrow’s challenges.
